This book which contains over 400 photographs, 61 colour aircraft side profiles and 136 colour emblems is the first book ever systematically describing and analysing one of the lesser known aspects of the history of Russian and Soviet aviation, namely aircraft camouflage and markings until 1941.
Because of lack of material published widely-spread opinions still exist that Russian and in particular Soviet aircraft were never renowned for interesting colours and emblems. Using a multitude of photographs (from official and private collections) and colour illustrations (in every single case based on contemporary photos, official documents, unit histories, reminiscences of aviators etc.) the authors unambiguously prove that Russian and also early Soviet aviation was second to none in respect to aircraft colouring, camouflage markings and personal emblems.
The authors present only documentally-proved facts, and refrain from repeating mistakes and unjustified conclusions based on "analysis" of unknown and unidentified photographs. All published photographs areaccompanied by exceptionally detailed captions, simultaneously giving a detailed review of the aviation development in general of the period concerned.
The text section of the book includes a historical overview of the development of camouflage and markings in Russian and Soviet civil and military aviation. The Russian and Soviet camouflage system was never so centrally regulated and controlled as is generally believed in the west, but has always been subject to individual and local initiatives, with wide variations in thematic, design and style of the identification codes of pre-WW II civil aircraft (which in many countries were strictly standardised) show astonishingly rich variations.
The colour profiles (made by the artist Valeriy I. Bulba) and the colour emblems made by co-author G.F. Petrov are the most accurate so far published.
