Before and During the Second World War Germany raised hundreds of combat formations. Many of them were manned, at least partially, by foreign volunteers.
The title of this research, Wave after Wave, refers to the organizational characteristics of those numerous combat formations, which were largely established in 35 Enlargement Waves. This research is a story of élan of those formations as well, focusing then on the unit emblems (painted on vehicles) of the Army (Heer) and Air-Forces’ (Luftwaffe) ground units, as well as of the Waffen-SS. The flight units of the Luftwaffe and units of the Navy (Kriegsmarine) have been excluded from the research.
The research does not possess any implicit or explicit political purpose of whatsoever. This is purely a report of at least eight years intensive research work and enthusiasm on the German WWII military organizations and unit emblems.
The author, Lieutenant Colonel (General Staff), Ph.D. (Pol.Sc.) Torsti Sirén graduated from the Finnish General Staff Officer Course in 1998, and from Helsinki University, Department of Political Science, in 2009 (Doctor of Philosophy, World Politics).
